History1960 - Cobb County-McCollum Airport opened with a 4,000 x 75 ft runway, a stud taxiway connecting the runway with the ramp, 60,000 sq ft of aprons, and an administration building 1962 - A full parallel taxiway was installed 1966 - Medium intensity runway lights are installed 1972 - A 580 ft paved safety overrun with a displaced threshold was added 1983 - Installation of a localizer and outer marker begins 1986 - The first Airport Manager is hired 1988 - The runway is extended 500 ft to the east 1991 - The County looks long-term with a layout plan revision that includes construction of a control tower, a runway extension, and an ILS glide slope 1995 - The new air traffic control tower opens for the Federal Contract Tower Program 1996 - A newly installed ILS Glide Slope becomes operational to all IFR traffic 1997 - The runway is extended 250 ft to the east making the new length 5,355 ft 2006 - The runway is extended another 950 ft to its existing length of 6,305 ft, making it the longest general aviation runway in metro-Atlanta 2008 - The runway is widened another 25 ft to a total of 100 ft wide. It is also reconstructed to make it an all new concrete runway |
